Ingredients

Oil

  • 3 tablespoons neutral oil (avocado or vegetable)

Chilies

  • 3 pieces Thai bird chilies (seeded for less heat)

Shallots

  • 3 pieces shallots (peeled and sliced into thin strips)

Garlic

  • 5 cloves garlic (peeled and sliced)

Ground Chicken

  • 1 pound ground chicken (lean ground meat works best)

Sugar

  • 2 teaspoons white sugar or mild honey

Soy Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (regular or low-sodium)

Fish Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (adds umami depth)

Chicken Broth

  • 0.33 cup chicken broth (low sodium or plain water)

Thai Basil Leaves

  • 1 bunch Thai basil leaves (leaves only, gently washed and dried)

Instructions 

  • Heat oil in a wok over high heat, then fry chilies, shallots, and garlic until fragrant and lightly golden.
  • Add ground chicken and stir-fry until cooked through, breaking into small pieces.
  • Stir in sugar, soy sauce, and fish sauce; add broth to loosen browned bits and simmer until sauce thickens.
  • Add basil leaves and toss until wilted, then remove from heat and serve hot over rice.

Notes

Use fresh Thai basil for authentic flavor and adjust chili heat to taste.
